Bunyan's Pilgrim

Picture depicting scenes from the book by John Bunyans Pilgrims Progress
Another old picture I have been working on - This time a black and white engraving first published in the USA 1853. The engraving based on John Bunyan's  "Pilgrims Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come". Portrays the whole of the Pilgrims Progress, The original design was invented by Rev. D Wight, and original sketches drawn by Hammatt Billings. Who was a leading artist of his day. Billings must have spent considerable time making and preparing original sketches for the picture about 1848, but it took another five years for the engravers to complete and then publish in 1853, but was never produced in full colour.  The original black and white image is very fascinating, but it wasnt a big hit with the art critics of the day, in fact some art critics savaged the artwork, one even writing it was a "Sublime failure" kind of sad how art critics can do this after all the hard work, can we imagine how Billings felt?. But in spite of what the art critics thought, it was still a popular picture with the general public and did quite well. After reading what happened (Accomplished in All Departments of Art. Hammatt Billings of Boston, 1818-1874 By James F. O'Gorman)  it made me wonder how it could be improved after 167 years? The picture has a lot going for it, even if its a faded black and white engraving and so perhaps colouring can make a difference....I couldnt resist trying to work out how it can be done.....at least I dont have professional Art critics to judge my efforts when finished!  Another thing which is remarkable about the engraving it has the whole of the story of Pilgrim's Progress illustrated, featuring the Pilgrim escaping from from the City of Destruction lower right to left and gradually ascending to the right and left zigzagging until the pilgrims reach the New Jerusalem. So if anyone is wondering what to buy children or young adults that may keep them fascinated while learning about Pilgrim's Progress and following Christian's route to the Heavenly City. The picture comes in various sizes, so for anyone needing a visual aid to teaching there are a number of sizes to choose. You are welcome to visit the products at the link below.

Photos showing detail from engraving of the book Pilgrims Progress

Even though I had finished colouring the engraving,  I have been following up with the book various scenes in the picture...as the picture recedes into the distance approaching Heavens Gate, everything becomes smaller and smaller...and there is an incredible amount of detail. But I could not seem to find the character, Ignorance or what happened to him, although I did eventually track him down - being carried away by two shining ones!  The scene is right at the end of Pilgrim's Progress, and its a very stark and sobering one, right after Christian and Hopeful are welcomed into the Celestial City - the New Jerusalem. Christian looks back and sees what happens to Ignorance.   He has appeared various times in the book and conversed with Christian and Hopeful.  He arrived at the gates of the Celestial City (Heaven) assuming he would be admitted. Instead quite the opposite happens, he is carried away by two shining ones and thrown into hell. Ignorance was presumptuous to think he would automatically be admitted into Heaven, even though he had no reason to think he was truly saved.  he just assumed a conventionally “good” life, exemplified by conventionally “good” works was enough. But he did not know the one who is the King of Heaven or the prescribed way of Salvation. Dear friends, Ignorance definitely is not bliss......

In Memoriam of the Heroes Who Fell at Maiwand

 picture of memorial of the "66th regiment" soldiers who fell at the battle of maiwand

In Memoriam of the Heroes Who Fell at Maiwand

A picture recently finished, a bit unusual and off the beaten track for me but couldn't resist the challenge.  Jack Fletcher, a member at the Victorian Military Society Group on FB had seen an original litho Memorial for the 24th Warwickshire Regiment who had fallen at Isandlwana. And was thinking how hard it would be to replicate for another regiment. Jack wrote "Essentially I'd change the regimental and Queens colours to the other regiment, capbadge, battle honours, dedicate it to the fallen from a different battle, ect but keep the general design the same."
I am familiar with the Memorial to the fallen of the 24th Warwickshire at Isandlwana 1879. But it's a very evocative image....when I first saw an example on the internet years ago. My immediate thoughts were mixed, I am familiar with the history of the battle....But what does one try to convey through a memoriam - about such loss and defeat?  So Jack's intriguing request on FB got me thinking.....How to make a similar memorial to a regiment that had fallen at a different battle - In this case the fallen from the 66th Berkshire Regiment at the Battle of Maiwand in 1880. What is interesting the two battles are a year and a half apart.  A heavy defeat, with significant loss of life, although not as high as at Isandlwana. The battle was remarkable for many reasons and an account is included in the Memoriam.  So with the help of Jack Fletcher who provided the information and research, I embarked on a Memorial to the 66th at Maiwand.  Most of the changes made are based on images from the time which I adapted for the memorial, the background is based on a litho of the battle field at Kushk-i-Nakud, (Which is also the name for the battle of Maiwand) I enjoyed the challenge and learning the history - and certainly gave me a work out technically speaking, a number of challenges to overcome. The original Memorial for the 24th at Isandlwana had a number of themes and ideas which worked visually but were specific to the 24th, which I could not include for a memorial to the 66th..space was limited to get things right. But now the memorial is done, one of the lasting impressions I have, is I think I have a greater appreciation what the Memorial means especially to the families of the soldiers who died. With no grave or burial in a  nearby cemetery. The memorial would have meant a great deal and may well have been all they had to remember a dear loved one lost on a foreign field, their name recorded in a memorial and hung in family homes.  One wonders why a similar image wasn't made for the Berkshire's at the time....perhaps the famous Maiwand Lion installed at Forbury Gardens 1884 for the fallen from the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment caught the attention more.  But at least there is a pictorial Memorial to the 66th now. Thankyou to Jack Fletcher for inspiring the project and challenge to make a memoriam to the 66th!

Baptist World history
Hanham Pastor’s Ingenious Diagram.

An Ingenious diagram drawn with great originality and beautifully arranged has been prepared by the Rev S. J. Ford, Pastor at Hanham Baptist Church. which gives a bird’s eye-view, as it were, of the history through the centuries of the Baptist Faith. He has entitled the diagram “The World View of the Baptist History” and a number of interesting lantern slides have been made illustrating its various sections. These were shown for the first time at the church last evening, when a large number were present to hear Mr Ford give a lecture on the subject. At the bottom of the diagram, which is completed in various colours, is given a picture of Palestine from the Mount of Lebanon to the Dead Sea. The whole Valley of the Jordan is depicted, and many scenes given of incidents in the life of Christ. The central picture shows the Saviour’s Baptism, which the lecturer declared was the genesis of the Baptist Church. From this scene of the Jordan is shown radiating a number of circles which, as shining stars, represent the Baptist churches named in the New Testament. From the one representing Rome, however, because of her love of pre-eminence and perversion of the truth, there emanates the black cloud of Roman Catholism which, in the course of 400 years, was to obliterate the churches of the New Testament.

Time of Darkness - During this period Baptist-like stars are shown endevouring to break through the darkness and bring the church back to the simple faith and practices of New Testament times. It is not until 1350 that a star of first magnitude appears, which is shown near the centre of the diagram-that of John Wycliffe. His star is shown shining upon the rock, Christ Jesus, on which rests an open Bible displaying the text, “ Believe and be Baptized.” Flowing away from the rock on either side is a stream of water, which forms the Baptismal pool. Here John Smythe. founder of the modern Baptist Church, is seen baptising himself. From the pool flows away the Baptismal river, which, in its course, early surrounds the first Baptist Church founded by John Smythe at Amsterdam in 1609, and  later the earliest church or the denomination in London., dating from 1613. The river then spreads away until it is represented as encircling the whole world. National Baptist “streams”are shown covering almost all the countries in the world, and on their banks circles are drawn. in each of which the date of the first Baptist church and association are given. These “streams,” through their respective union boards and conventions converge in a central pool which represents the Baptist World Alliance formed in 1905. The top of the diagram is devoted to a representation of the missionary “crown” of the denomination.  The diagram is also crowded with picturisations of familiar events in Baptist history, and portraits of great men in the denomination.  Some of the incidents shown along the “Via dolorosa” are the flogging of Obadiah Holmes: John Bunyan’s prison; the first meeting place in Hanham Woods of 1658; Benjamin Bampfield dying in Newgate Gaol: Broadmead meeting house barred and shut against worshippers. Andrew Gifford of Pithay Church, Bristol, demanding his release from Gloucester Gaol; and others of equal interest. Portraits are given of  Bunyan, William Carey and C.H.Spurgeon.  There are also statistics which include  the estimated number of Baptists at present (excluding Russia) viz, 9,750,000. The diagram is entirely self-explanatory, and contains an abundance of information.  Mr C. King-Smith presided over the meeting and mentioned that Mr Ford had spent two years preparing his chart. He has been invited to give the lectures at various Bristol churches..

Pray for George Soros

picture about prayer for "George Soros" encountering the Lord like Saul of Tarsus

I need to share for agreement in prayer. I wont go into much detail, I think most of you are familiar with what is happening in different places around the world and what is at stake. Most will have heard of George Soros. but if unsure, Its quite easy to find information about him on the internet. There is every reason to believe we must pray specifically for him. That the light of the Lord Jesus Christ would be shone upon George Soros, not just him, but his activities also. Rather like Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus. If you keep up with the news you will understand . Many of the groups he supports - if they succeed in their goals, life as we know it will change overnight. So we need to arise in prayer and action now, before it is too late. (More sketches may come) but The picture here is specifically for George Soros and the Light of the Lord Jesus Christ to shine upon him... You are welcome to print the picture and what is shared. For prayer in your church's and fellowships. But above all we need to pray!! I am doing my best to alert people for prayer and action....But others are also too.

Please pray in agreement in Jesus Name!..... Because nothing is impossible for God! The Lord did it for Paul (Saul of Tarsus ) - He can do it for George Soros! Let George Soros hear - "Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “George, George, why are you persecuting Me?”

May the Lord even wake George Soros in the middle of the night and show him His great need of the Lord Jesus Christ!

"...He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end." Ecclesiastes 3:11 God puts eternity in the heart of man -There is a day when we all have to stand before God and give an account for our lives - good or bad! And so we need to pray George Soros will repent and turn to the Lord Jesus Christ. Since the rioting, many Innocent lives have been lost including children, because of all the trouble.

A scripture verse to finish on - To ponder and pray over for all the would be activists, revolutionaries and extremists -
"There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers. "Proverbs 6:16-19

The Great Reset - George Orwell

The Great Reset - George Orwell

The Great Reset
The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history - George Orwell

British Police run from giant robots threatening to squash all they see who oppose their narrative. - "the mob" whipped up by radical political groups funded by those who want world domination and power - They call it - "The Great Reset" a polite term for revolution - but its actually about destabilizing democracies and undermining freedom. A soft totalitarianism, where race has been weaponized in this war to silence, cancel out and demonize all who do not agree, at the same time sowing seeds of division and hatred - Many already lose jobs or removed from their posts because they do not agree or accept the narrative driven by radical Marxists/communists. Many already cave in through fear....if we look at history....we see many parallels, and its precisely what happened.. when Hitler and the Nazis rose to power. He used the race card to demonize Jewish people and blame them to get what they wanted. Also the communists had lots of practice destabilizing nations since World War 2, using the same tactics and strategy. In the book 1984, a dystopian social science fiction novel by English novelist George Orwell. Portrayed such a terrible world where only one point of view is allowed. It was published on 8 June 1949. Sadly today, we see a parallel. The threat is real - As a famous quote says “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” So this is not the moment to be fearful...this is not a moment to be hiding under the table, or behind the curtains thinking it will all blow over. What does the scripture say - "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." 2 Timothy 1:7
We who belong to the true Church have the answer to the Great Reset - The Kingdom of God!
We hear much about Black lives matter, White lives matter, All lives matter....But there is only one thing that truly matters. Are we washed in the blood of the Lamb? If not, it makes everything else rather irrelevant. Because it is only through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ we are truly reconciled to God and Man. Those of us who already belong to Christ and in the household of faith are united, whatever skin colour. It's a glorious reality, a wonderful reality which we must celebrate and live out! We must reflect this on earth as it is in heaven….where no racism or injustice exists…..let it be on earth as it is in Heaven in and through our lives. Churches must unite and visibly demonstrate unity to oppose forces which would we have in Christ publicly. Proclaiming unity in the streets and squares...The world needs to see the reality we have in Christ Jesus!

Last week. (Weekending 31/05/2020)  ......I was wondering about many things....and what is happening in life, to the state of the world, but also to those who die without Christ......wondering what I could do better to reach the lost. As I lay in a melancholic state of mind .....The tune of a majestic Hymn by Charles Wesley came to mind...and blew the melancholy away!
Lo! he comes with clouds descending,
Once for favoured sinners slain;
Thousand thousand saints attending
Swell the triumph of his train:
Alleluya! Alleluya! Alleluya!
God appears, on earth to reign.
My heart jumped at this joyous thought of Christs’ return, this majestic hymn so eloquently conveys! The wondrous thought of Christ’s return! Let us savour this wondrous thought! But do we all look forward to that day? As we better believe….not a maybe, or a could be….it's a certainty! Live your life in the light of Christ's return…and YOU will be full of joy!
But someone might say, what about the lost you were thinking about? Well of course we pray and endevour to be a faithful witness.... But the day is coming when time passes to Eternity...and for the Christian it will be joy unspeakable...but for the lost who die without Christ - it is too late. God knows when this will happen ...and the signs are already happening as it is written in scripture…...
Jim Stier of YWAM Brasil, prayed recently week for the Lord to pour out a great wave of the fear of the Lord during these times….Let us agree with Jim in prayer and say - Amen!

Portuguese Translation

Semana Anterior.
Uma vez morto para nossa salvação;
Milhares e milhares de santos que comparecem,
Eles engrossam o triunfo para o Seu povo:
Aleluia! Aleluia! Aleluia!

Scripture Clock

Private Collection - © Peter N Millward
What exactly does the Scripture Clock mean?  That was the question I was asking myself. This curious clock and explanation are contained in a book called  "Memories of Gospel Triumphs Among the Jews During the Victorian Era" (1894)  I bought it years ago, a fascinating book to study, but I always felt something more could be done with the Scripture Clock than just leave it unseen within its pages. For those of you familiar with the designs by William C Miles - Gospel Compass and Gospel Target prints one can see similarities, but the Scripture Clock is very different in application and specifically in helping Jewish people know their identity, hope and destiny contained in the scriptures.   It was originally designed and published by Rev John Dunlop -  Secretary of the British Society for the Jews.  The original format and image was only black and white and limited to being printed within a book. Making it now into a colour print with explanation, should reach a wider audience displayed on walls and homes. The text is written, as found - English language from 1894, readers then would have understood. But today's readers?  It isn't easy, the language even though English belongs to a different era. The use of Roman Numerals for the scripture texts is also a further challenge for the unaccustomed.  I listed all the 12 scriptures used in the hours of the clock below to understand better. After some prayer and meditation it started to dawn on me what the Scripture Clock means.  It is 12 carefully selected scriptures to use when presenting the Gospel to Jewish people. Each scripture is a reminder, to help Jews know who they are, their nation, their land, their need....and their Saviour. If these scriptures are adhered to in presenting the Gospel, it should lead many to the 12th hour of the Jewish Clock - “Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe”
It speaks on so many levels to the identity and destiny of the Jewish people.

So here it is, republished in 2020 after 126 years! You could say  a lot has happened since 1894!  The Jews returned to their home land and now visibly established as a nation once again, Israel - Just as the scriptures teach.

Why are the four seasons displayed on the clock? - Summer, Winter Autumn, Spring? And why are they arranged so curiously?  The sons of Issachar will know - The are called to understand the times and seasons - And also this Scripture clock.

"And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment." 1 Chronicles 12:32 (KJV)

Below are the 12 scriptures - I left them in Kings James Version as that is how they were written to be originally understood.

The Scripture Clock - 12 hours - 12 Scriptures

1 “Jews” - The first occurance of this word “The Jews” in the Old testament  “At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drave the Jews from Elath: and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there unto this day.”  2 Kings 16:6 (KJV)

2 “The Jews”The first occurance of this word “The Jews” in the New Testament “Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him”. Matthew 2:2 (KJV)

3 - Jews by Nature - “We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,”  Galatians 2:15-21 (KJV)

4 - “The Land of the Jews”    "And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:”,  Acts 10:39 (KJV)

5 - “The Nation of the Jews”   “And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews,” Acts 10: 22 (KJV)

6 - “For Salvation is of the Jews”  “ Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.” John 4:22 (KJV)

7 - “Write not the King of the Jews” “Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.” John 19:21 (KJV)

8 - “Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews” “And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews.”  John 19:19 (KJV)

9 - “We preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a Stumbling block”.  “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness”  1 Corinthians 1:23  (KJV)

10 - “Testifying both to the Jews and also to the Greeks.”   “Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Acts 20:21 (KJV)

11 - “I became as a Jew that I might gain the Jews.”  “And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law” 1 Corinthians 9:20-23 (KJV)

12 - “Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe” “And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law:  Acts 21:20 (KJV)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Explanation of the Scripture Clock - Rev J. Dunlop -  Secretary of the British Society for the Jews.
The Voice of the Clock.
JOHN BERRIDGE wrote, and pasted on his clock, the following lines : —
" Here my master bids me stand,
And mark the time with faithful hand ;
What is his will is my delight,
To tell the hours by day, by night.
Master, be wise, and learn of me,
To serve thy God as I serve thee ! "
So would we give the clock a voice, as it strikes the hours, and make it speak the words of God, concerning the Jews.
The Clock strikes
I. " Jews."—" This word " says Dr. Eadie " first occurs in this passage (ii. Kings xvi. 6), and denotes the Judeans, or men of Judah, in contradistinction from the seceding ten tribes who retained the name of Israel. The name Israelite's was applied to the twelve tribes or descendants of Jacob (Israel) as a body; but after the separation of the tribes, the above distinction obtained until the Babylonish Captivity, which terminated the existence of the kingdom of Judah; and thenceforward, until the present day, the descendants of Jacob are called Jews, and constitute one of the two classes into which the whole human family is frequently divided, viz., Jews and Gentiles." (Rom. ii. 9, 10.)
II. " The Jews." -Here the word "Jews" occurs for the first time in the New Testament. The Jews were regarded by the wise men, as a people, with Jesus as their King.
III. "Jews by Nature."—"Jews by nature," not by proselytism, Jews like Paul and Peter, have cast away their trust in the law, and have been justified by believing in Jesus.
IV. " Land of the Jews."—That land should be to us most interesting, as it wras trodden by the feet, and hallowed by the presence of Immanuel.
V. " The Nation of the Jews."—" A nation that living shall die, and dying shall live; that trampled by all, shall trample upon all; that bleeding from a thousand wounds, shall be unhurt; that beggared, shall wield the wealth of nations; that without a name, shall sway the councils of kings; that without a city, shall inhabit in all kingdoms ; that scattered like the dust, shall be bound together like the rock; that perishing by the sword, by the chain, by famine, by fire, shall be imperishable, unnumbered, glorious as the stars of heaven."
VI. " For Salvation is of the Jews," —The Author of Salvation, the first preachers of salvation, and the word of salvation, were all " of the Jews."
VII. " Write not the king of the Jews,"—said Jewish Priests to Pilate. But Pilate neither would nor could alter what he had written.
The Clock strikes
VIII. " Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews.',
IX. " We preach Christ Crucified unto the Jews a Stumbling-block." Seeing that the preaching of the cross excited the deepest hostility of the Jews, why did the Apostles preach it ? Because there was no other way of bringing them to penitence, pardon, peace, and purity. While the preaching of the Cross was to many Jews a " stumbling-block," it was to many the stepping-stone from Earth to Paradise.
X. " Testifying both to the Jews and also to the Greeks."
XI. " I  became as a jew that I might
gain the Jews."—These voices of the clock, teach us how to win the Jew for Jesus. While testifying of repentance toward God, and faith in Christ, treat the Jew as a brother.
As the clock strikes ~
XII. we learn the grand result of adhering to this method.
"Thou seest, brother, how many thousands (lit., myriads) of Jews there are which believe."—Let the disciples of Christ adopt this method now, and the same result will follow. In it we have the prophecy of a golden time coming for God's ancient and beloved people.
" The Jews," said one, " have been sprinkled like millions of globules of quicksilver over the length and breadth of the world; every drop reflecting bright beams from the past, and mirroring forth the morn' ing of a glorious future."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Clock and the Society Commended by the late Rev. C. H. Spurgeon.
Our friend, Mr. Spurgeon, was kind enough to give our Scripture Clock the first place in his admirable Magazine " The Sword and the Trowel," for May, 1880, and with it the following interesting note :—
" This Clock was brought out in the Jewish Herald, which is the excellent monthly organ of the British Society for the Propagation of the Gospel among the Jews, and it struck us as worthy of a wider circulation. We commend it and the Society to the thoughtful minds of all believers. Has not the time come in which the Church will lay the seed of Israel more upon her heart ? "

The Gospel Ship is now republished from an original Chomolithograph print circa 1880s - 1900s.  The designer HY. P - Henry Pickering  (1858–1941) was a well known Christian publisher and Journalist. And made an ingenious way to apply scripture and Bible texts into a maritime theme. Research so far shows three very similar versions. One other similar picture had been designed about the same time and mentioned in an article in the Herts Advertiser 29th January 1887.  Title "Homeward Bound" designed by WCM - William Charles Miles, journalist and designer of the Gospel Compass and Gospel Target.  It is not known if any examples of WCMs "Homeward Bound still exist...but if any visitors know of any examples, please contact me.  It is not known if Henry Pickering designed other pictures, but one other design is similar - The Gospel Lifeboat, is a similar idea with Biblical texts and scriptures.  The source and inspiration for the picture is not clear. But in Rev J H Vincent's 'Curiosities of the Bible' (New York, 1888) gives us an outline to the pictures design, with an explanation of religious quotes and texts to explain teachings from the Bible.

For further reflection.......
 A vision of a Gospel ship on dry land was seen by many during the Hebridean Revival...
"Another night, as we left, we saw in the open field, a ship, as if it was a navy ship, all lit up, all lit up between the masts and everything. But we knew it wasn't real...... for it was on dry land, it was on dry land. We couldn't, we couldn't say a word. None of us could even speak. "Be still, and know that I am God" That's all that we could say."  Donald John Smith. (Eyewitness)

Alistair Petrie commenting on the Hebridean Revival and vision of a Gospel ship...."Where they see His profound divinity coming as a Gospel ship which a whole lot of them saw at one point,  and they all saw this ship which has been seen only a very few times in history so I'm told."

                                        The Hebrides Revival: A Retrospective
In October, 2007, George Otis, Jr., along with son, Brook, and a small team, returned to the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Their purpose was to meet people who had experienced the extraordinary revivals that occurred there in the 1920s, '30s, '40s, and early '50s.

Vision of a Bible Ship
The following article was found among the papers of the late A.W. Pollok, B. A., who graduated from Dalhousie College in April 1872, and was drowned at Port Hawkesbury in August of the same year.
"As I lay musing a vision passed before me of a noble ship. She was built in the New Jerusalem, and her builder and maker was God. Her timbers were of the strong oaks of Zion, her masts of the tree of Calvary, and her rigging of the cords of love, her cable of the three-fold cords of faith, hope, and love, which could not easily be broken. Her helm glittered like the star of prophecy. Her anchor was from Immanuel's land. Her figure-head was the emblem of righteousness, and her name was the Word of God. From stem to stem, from deck to keel, she was a goodly ship. Her deck was the broad platform on which Christians stand. Her guns thundered forth the terrors of the law, but her mission was emphatically peace. 'Her weapons were not carnal, but spiritual, mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.' Her painting was beauty. She was streaked with white, and sprinkled with blood. Her ship's crew were the Apostles and Prophets. Her captain the Prince of Peace. Her cargo was truth, and her broad banner love, the inscription 'Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth and good will to men.' She sailed over a tempestuous ocean. The billows of hell drove furiously over her bows, but her bulwarks were impregnable. She carried no boats for her safety, because she never could go down. Her progress was onward, wafted by the breezes of the Eternal. She sailed from the port of heaven, and her destination was to the habitable parts of the globe, and her mission to the ends of the earth. The nations hailed her approach with joy. She scattered blessings in her course, and returned homeward bound, freighted with living souls, and anchored under the throne of God and the Lamb.

Trust and Obey

 Click picture for prints and cards and much more

While looking through old sketches and photocopies of sketches....I came across one I did years ago as a commission..... Somehow it seemed appropriate to look at it again and make it into colour.....I sketched a young woman walking through a forest full of scary trees next to a cemetery, and a freshly dug grave nearby with arrows in various places which had missed along the path. Psalm 91:4-6.."He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday." In the colour picture I placed words from the old hymn Trust and Obey.....Some how it sums up the life of a believer and all who would embrace the words and promises of God in Psalm 91.......Trust and Obey.

1 When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain:
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2 Not a burden we bear,
not a sorrow we share,
but our toil he doth richly repay;
not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
but is blest if we trust and obey. [Refrain]

3 But we never can prove
the delights of his love
until all on the altar we lay;
for the favor he shows,
for the joy he bestows,
are for them who will trust and obey. [Refrain]

4 Then in fellowship sweet
we will sit at his feet,
or we'll walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do,
where he sends we will go;
never fear, only trust and obey. [Refrain]
